Douglas is more woods than town
Douglas State Forest takes up a large share of this town, Wallum Lake sits on the Rhode Island line, and East Douglas is the village where most of the daily business happens. Route 16 runs east to west, Route 96 heads north, and past those the roads narrow and the trees close in.
Living inside a forest has a cost on the outside of a house. Needles and leaves fill gutters faster than anywhere flat and open, duff sits on roof slopes that never dry, and the north wall grows a green film every few seasons. Shingles streak dark, and that is algae rather than wear. It lifts off with a soft wash, low pressure and a biodegradable detergent, which is what shingle manufacturers ask for.
Around Wallum Lake and the smaller ponds there are camps and converted cottages, older and lighter built than a year round house. Decks and stairs down to the water turn slick under canopy. Those get cleaned and brightened, not stripped.
We wet plantings down before the first application and rinse them again at the end. Under trees there is usually a lot of planting to look after.
