Serving Providence County Homeowners

Old farmhouses, mill villages, and a lot of tree cover

Providence County is really two different jobs. The northwest corner, Burrillville, Glocester, Foster, Scituate, is rural Rhode Island: farmhouses, long driveways, wooded lots, and enough canopy that north-facing siding never sees direct sun. The Blackstone Valley side, Smithfield, North Smithfield, Lincoln, Cumberland, is mill villages and postwar suburbs, tighter lots, older housing stock, and a lot of vinyl installed over original clapboard.

Both have the same underlying problem at different speeds. Shade plus humidity equals algae. It shows up as a green film on siding and black streaks on the roof, always on the north and east faces first. Under heavy canopy a house goes from clean to visibly green in about three years. Out in the open it takes twice that.

Our house washing is a soft wash. A biodegradable, plant-safe detergent does the cleaning, the rinse pressure stays low, and the landscaping gets wet down before and rinsed after. Older homes here are the reason we work that way. Original clapboard, cedar shake, and painted trim on a 19th century farmhouse will not survive a pressure washer, and neither will the glazing on old windows. Roof algae comes off the same careful way, see roof cleaning.

Mature oak and maple is the other recurring job. Leaves fill gutters twice each fall here, and the oaks hold on into November, so cleaning in early October usually means doing it again. Gutter cleaning before winter is what keeps ice dams off the roof edge. Long driveways under trees pick up tannin staining and moss, which is a surface cleaner job, see driveway and concrete cleaning.

We do not cover Providence proper or the dense neighborhoods east of the city. That is a different kind of work and there are good crews there already. What we are good for is the northwest half and the Blackstone Valley towns, roughly 30 to 40 minutes from our shop in Pomfret.
