Pressure Washing in Windham County, CT

Applewood started because two kids from Pomfret grew up looking at the same houses and figured somebody ought to take care of them properly. Windham County is not a service area we expanded into. It is the twenty minutes around our shop, and most of our customers are people we would run into at the transfer station anyway.

The Quiet Corner has three distinct kinds of housing and they do not want the same treatment. Around the Pomfret and Woodstock greens you have 18th and 19th century farmhouses with original clapboard, old glazing, and trim that has been painted more times than anyone can count. Those get the lowest pressure we run, because a wand on old putty glazing will cost you a window, and blasting soft old clapboard raises the grain permanently. Through Danielson, Putnam, and down into Willimantic it is mill housing, tight lots in the river valleys along the Quinebaug and the Shetucket. Damp sits in those valleys, houses are close enough together that the north walls barely see sun, and access is the planning problem rather than the cleaning. Then Brooklyn, Hampton, and the outlying roads are capes, colonials, and ranches on wooded acreage, where the trees are the whole story.

Tree canopy is what makes this county different from anywhere we work. Oak and maple over a roofline keeps the north and east faces from ever fully drying, and a house tucked into the trees goes visibly green in about three years while the same house on an open lot takes six or seven. It is also why gutter timing matters more here. The maples finish in October but the oaks hold their leaves into November and sometimes past Thanksgiving, so anyone who cleans gutters in early October out here is going to be doing it twice.

Two local details nobody thinks about until they see the result. Rural Connecticut sands its roads as much as it salts them, so by March there is a gray grit band across the bottom three feet of every house on a through road, and it does not rinse off with a hose. And most properties out here are on well water, which is hard, so windows and light-colored siding pick up mineral spotting that looks like the cleaner failed when it is actually the rinse water. We account for both.

What we do is match method to surface rather than to house. House washing is a soft wash, plant-safe detergent doing the work with the rinse pressure kept low. Roof cleaning is the same principle up top, because the black streaks are algae and pressure takes the granules with them. Concrete and pavers get a surface cleaner so the slab comes out even instead of striped, see driveway and concrete cleaning. Wood gets brightened, not blasted, see deck and patio cleaning. And gutter cleaning is done by hand off a ladder with the debris bagged, not blown over the side into your beds.
