Green at the center, subdivisions around it

Two kinds of house in Tolland, wanting different things

Tolland is arranged around one of the better preserved greens in the state, with 18th and 19th century houses facing it and the old county buildings alongside. Everything past that is newer. Route 74 and Route 195 carry most of the local traffic, I-84 crosses the north end, and the Skungamaug works its way south toward Coventry.

Houses on and near the Green have painted clapboard, wood trim, and window glazing older than anyone reading this. They get soft washed, meaning the detergent does the work at low pressure and no wand ever touches the siding. Subdivision houses are vinyl and fiber cement, which forgive more, but they still come out better with a detergent wash than a blast.

Newer neighborhoods ask for different things. Paver patios gone dull with weeds in the joints, stamped concrete around a pool, windows nobody has done in a few seasons. Sealing pavers runs $2.25 a square foot after cleaning, and windows are $8 a pane with a $200 minimum.

Out on the wooded back roads it is the familiar problem instead, algae on the shaded wall and streaking down the north roof slope.
