Tobacco ground and open sky

Ellington still farms, and the buildings show it

Ellington sits on the eastern shoulder of the Connecticut River valley, and the flat ground here grew shade tobacco for generations. Long low barns still stand in the fields. Route 83 runs north to south, Route 140 crosses it, and Crystal Lake sits up in the northeast corner ringed with cottages and year round houses.

Farm properties are multi building properties. The house is usually the smallest part of the quote. Barns, equipment sheds, and the fence runs along the road weather harder than the house does, because nobody ever gets to them. We price the whole property in one number so there is no second visit later.

Out in the open, exposure is the issue rather than shade. Wind carries field dust and pollen onto the siding, and a south wall in full sun bakes whatever lands on it. That still comes off with detergent and low pressure. In the newer subdivisions and around Crystal Lake it is the ordinary algae story again.

Ellington is a longer drive for us, roughly forty minutes, so we run this side of Tolland County on a lighter rotation. Book with some lead time and it is no trouble at all.
