Enfield stretches from the Connecticut River east toward Somers, and each corner of it grew around something different. Thompsonville came up around the carpet mills, Hazardville around the powder works, and Scitico and Shaker Pines sit further out east. Route 5 runs the river side, Route 190 crosses the middle, and I-91 takes the through traffic.

Thompsonville is the tightest of the four. Worker housing, multi families, tall narrow buildings on small lots, and neighbors close enough that overspray control is part of the job. Anything painted there gets a soft wash, meaning detergent at low pressure and a rinse that will not lift paint or push water behind trim.

The eastern neighborhoods are more suburban, with vinyl siding, decks, and concrete drives that gray out over a few winters. Simpler work, though the method for the siding does not change.

Around Shaker Pines and the ponds, damp and shade speed up algae on north walls and roof slopes.
