Westerly has two kinds of building and both are fussy
Westerly runs from the Pawcatuck River down to open ocean. Watch Hill, Misquamicut, and Weekapaug hold the summer houses, Bradford is the old mill village up the river, and the granite that built monuments all over the country came out of the ground here.
The shore houses are mostly cedar shingle, shake, or painted clapboard, and cedar is the easiest material in New England to wreck. It goes silver gray on its own, and a pressure washer will raise the grain and leave marks that never fade out. Ours never touches it. A plant safe cleaner does the work at low pressure and the rinse only carries it off.
Granite is everywhere here, in steps, walls, posts, and walkways. Stone will take a surface cleaner, and run properly it comes out even instead of blotchy.
Salt is the reason the whole cycle repeats. It sits on siding and holds moisture, which is what algae feeds on, so a house near the beach needs attention sooner than one a few miles up the Pawcatuck.
