Stonington houses live in salt spray
Stonington runs from the Pawcatuck River east of Westerly out to the Borough on its point, with Mystic on the western side and Wequetequock and the shoreline neighborhoods in between. Route 1 and Route 27 carry the traffic and I-95 crosses the top of town.
Salt is what makes this different from inland work. Salt film holds moisture against a wall, and moisture is what algae wants, so a shaded elevation two blocks from the water can green up in half the time it would take twenty miles inland. Getting the salt off is half of what a wash accomplishes down here.
The Borough is a whole other level of careful. Houses are old, close together, and often shingled or clapboarded with original trim and glazing. Pressure is out of the question. Low pressure with a plant safe detergent, and a setup that keeps water and overspray off the neighbor's building.
Salt gets into hardscape too. Bluestone, brick walks, and granite steps hold a white bloom and a green film in the shade, which a surface cleaner takes off evenly.
