An island between two bridges

Jamestown is the most exposed place we work

Jamestown sits on Conanicut Island with bay on both sides, the Newport bridge to the east and the Jamestown bridge to the west. East Ferry is the village, Beavertail runs out to the point, and Mackerel Cove cuts the island nearly in two. Not much stands between a house here and the weather.

Exposure changes the schedule more than anything else. Wind carries salt spray well inland on this island, and every elevation gets it rather than just the water side. Houses that would go three or four years between washes on the mainland often want a yearly rinse out here, and that rinse is as much about getting salt off as it is about looks.

Glass takes the worst of it. Salt haze builds on a window quickly, and glass facing the bay is worth doing every season at $8 a pane with a $200 minimum.

Shingle and clapboard get low pressure and a plant safe detergent, and railings and decks facing open water get cleaned and brightened rather than blasted.
