Old sash, wavy glass, and a slower hand
Pomfret is home. The shop is here, so a window job in town is a short run up the road, and we already know what most of these houses are made of before we pull in.
The colonials and farmhouses along Route 169 and the back roads off Route 44 were built with true divided-light sash. What reads as one window from the driveway is often twelve or fifteen separate panes. That single fact drives everything about the time and the price. A house with forty windows of six-over-six glass is not a forty window job, it is a job with several hundred pieces of glass in it, and anyone quoting by the window before counting the lights is guessing.
So we count first. Residential window cleaning is $8 per pane with a $200 minimum.
A lot of Pomfret glass is original, and original glass is not flat. It ripples, it holds bubbles, and it is thinner than anything made in the last eighty years. You cannot lean on it, and you cannot run a squeegee fast across a six inch light held in by century-old putty. Those windows get smaller tools and more passes. It takes longer and it looks right when it is finished.
Storm windows are the other half of the work here. Wooden and combination storms both have to come off before anyone reaches the outer face of the primary sash, and the tracks pack with pollen over a season. We take them down, clean both faces, clear the track, and put them back without forcing anything. Screens here are often original too, with brittle frames and loose spline, so they get washed flat and gently rather than leaned against a fence and hosed.
