Wind, farm dust, and why rain never helps
Brooklyn is open country, and open country dirties glass differently than woods do. Where there is field on the other side of the road you get dust, chaff, and seed carried on the wind, and it settles into a fine even layer that rain smears around rather than removes. Add the crossroads where Route 6 and Route 169 meet and there is road film sitting on top of the farm dust.
The houses run to two extremes. Around the town green and the village center you have antique homes with divided-light sash and old wooden storms. Out on the rural roads there is newer construction with big insulated units and a lot fewer panes. We price both the same way, $8 per pane with a $200 minimum, counted before anyone quotes anything.
People assume a good hard rain rinses their windows. It does close to the opposite. Rain wets the dust already sitting on the pane, drags it downward, and dries it into streaks that look worse than the even film you started with. On an exposed Brooklyn lot with a field across the road that cycle runs all season, which is why these houses can look freshly dirty a week after a storm.
The fix is not clever, it is just work done properly. Glass washed, edges and corners detailed, frames and sills wiped so nothing runs back down onto clean glass an hour later. Screens come out and get washed rather than left in the opening with the dust still in the mesh, because clean glass behind a dirty screen does not look clean from the chair you actually sit in. What the standard service includes is on our window cleaning page.

Antique sash near the green, big glass on the back roads
The older houses close to the Brooklyn green are careful, unhurried work. Small lights, original putty, glass that is not flat, wooden storms that have to come down and go back up without being wrestled. It goes slowly and it ought to. We do not scrape at old glazing and we do not put weight on thin glass.
The newer houses out on the farm roads are the opposite problem. Fewer panes but much larger ones, plus slider walls, sunroom glass, and the tall window over an entry that has not been reached since the house was framed. Those get the right setup rather than a shrug.
Spring and fall are the two sensible times to have it done. Spring clears the pollen and whatever the winter left on the outside, fall gets you clean glass heading into the short days.
Text photos or a window and pane count to (860) 553-9326 for a flat price. If we are coming out anyway, it is worth asking about gutter cleaning at the same time, and late fall is when we start booking Christmas light installation for the season.
