What the wind carries in open country
Brooklyn is more open than the towns north of it. A lot of the land is still farm and field, so gutters here fill with what the wind carries as much as with what drops off the tree overhead. That means seed, chaff, dust, and shingle grit, and it settles into a dense layer that a leaf blower slides right across without moving. Hand cleaning is the only thing that gets it out.
