Christmas Light Installation

Close to the road, and seen by everyone

Putnam houses sit close to the road, and in the older parts of town they sit close to each other. Downtown and through the antique district the blocks run two and three stories with the front step nearly on the sidewalk, so a lit facade in Putnam is not only for the people inside it. Everyone walking to the shops or coming through on Route 44 sees it, which is a fair argument for getting the roofline right.

It also means the eaves you want lit are a long way up, on a narrow lot, in November. That is the part homeowners tend to underestimate. A three-story front on a cold wet afternoon is no place to be learning ladder work, and down in the Quinebaug valley the damp hangs around well into the evening.

Tall fronts, narrow lots, and cold-weather ladder work

On the taller Putnam houses we plan the ladder before we plan the lights. Finding footing on a narrow side yard or a short apron of frontage takes time, and rushing that is how people end up hurt. We work the eaves and rooflines in sections and cut every run to the real measurement of the gutter line, rather than hanging a store-bought set and letting the leftover dangle at the corner.

You choose between commercial-grade C9 bulbs and mini lights. C9s carry better from a distance, which suits a tall three-story front that has to read from across the street. Minis look right on a smaller cape or ranch out past the Route 12 and Route 44 split, where whoever is looking is much closer to the house. Either way we bring the clips, the cords, and the timers.

What a standard install covers here

A standard install is eaves and rooflines, walkways, porch posts, and one tree. Anything beyond that, extra trees, fence runs, or yard features, is priced separately before we start rather than added afterward. Most homes run $600 to $1,400 depending on how much roofline there is and how high it sits, and a tall downtown front costs more than a ranch because it takes longer and takes more care.

Installs happen in November, removal is finished by mid-January, and every strand comes back to our shop for storage until the following season. The lights carry a two-year warranty against bulb burnout, so a bulb dying in the middle of December is our problem to fix and not yours. Figure three to five hours to install on most houses and one to two hours to take down.

We are ten minutes down Route 44 in Pomfret. Call or text (860) 553-9326, read the full Christmas light installation page, book gutter cleaning on the same roofline before the lights go up, or see every town in our service area.
